Indiana University is represented by the Hoosiers in the NCAA Division I-A College gridirion wars, playing under the Big Ten Conference. IU's football program actually started in 1884, but played competitive ball formally in 1887 in the Independent scene. The Hoosiers joined the Indiana Intercollegiate Athletic Association and played with the conference from 1890 through 1895, but found a long-term home with the Big Ten Conference by 1900. The Hossiers' run in the realms of collegiate football has been anything but sterling as the team has captured only two Conference titles thus far. IU has also appeared in several postseason Bowl Games, including three straight from 1986-88 and three more in the 90's era, winning 3 Bowl titles in eight different occassions.

To its credit, the IU football program has produced several big names including Pro Football Hall of Famer Pete Pihos, and five College Football Hall of Famers namely Pihos, Zora Clevinger, Bill Ingram, George Taliaferro, and John Tavener.
