The Illinois Fighting Illini, or simply The Illini, represent the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the NCAA Division I-A College football and competes with ten others in the Big Ten Conference. The Illinois college football program started back in 1890 as an independent team but soon after joined the Illinois Intercollegiate League a year later. In 1896, Illinois found a new home with the Big Ten Conference, and won their first ever conference championship in 1910. The Fighting Illini went on to duplicate this feat 14 more times, adding these titles to their four national championships, with one other national championship selection in 1951 when the team finished the season with a 9 win, 0 loss, and 1 draw card.

The team has also appeared in a number of post season Bowl Games, 14 to be exact, bringing home the title in six different occassions. Also since 1966, the Illini has a 21.9% winning percentage against top 25 teams, 20% winning percentage against number 1 ranked opponents, and a 10% mark against teams in the top 5. As of 2006, the team was ranked 63 overall in terms of winning percentage with a 52% mark.
