The Idaho Vandals is an NCAA Division I-Bowl Subdivision football team that represents the University of Idaho in the Western Athletic Conference. The Idaho football team debuted in 1893 with a game that ended in a draw against Spokane AC. The team finished their maiden season with two consecutive shut-out wins over Washington State but suffered the following four seasons with winless records. From 1893 to 1921, Idaho played as an independent team, joined the Pacific Coast Conference from 1922 through 1958, then became independent once more from 1959 through 1962. It was however only in the 1960's during the team's stint with the Big Sky Conference that the Vandals were able to have its first taste of championship. Stephen Musseau took over the coaching chores in 1965 then led the Vandals to a share of the Big Sky title with a conference best 3-1-0 record. Coaches Y.C. McNease and Don Robbins duplicated the feat in 1968 and 1971, respectively, before the team experienced another dry championship spell in the next 10+ years. Idaho did return into championship form in the mid 1980's with its 4th Big Sky title in 1985 (6-1-0 in conference play), and a three-peat championship reign from 1987, '88, and '89. Idaho claimed its last Big Sky title (shared) in 1992, led by coach John Smith to a 6-1-0 conference record. Just a year after joining the Big West Conference, Idaho was formally elevated as a Division I-A school in 1997. The team only spent 5 seasons in the Big West, with their best performance coming in 1998 when they claimed their only Big West championship with a 4-1-0 record then went on to beat Southern Mississippi in the team's first ever Bowl Game appearance (Humanitarian Bowl). From 2001 through 2004, Idaho was a member of the Sun Belt Conference then left for the Western Athletic Conference in 2005. The team has yet to land in the .500 winning mark since 1999 and is yet to win a title or appear in a Bowl Game since 1998.

Idaho currently plays an annual rivalry game with the Washington State called the "Battle of the Palouse" (Washington has a distinct advantage in victories over Idaho, winning 69 times in 90 games, with three draws). Another rivalry game, the Battle of Idaho, involves "state-mates" Idaho and Boise State and has been on since 1972 (Boise State has a very slight edge, 18-17-1). Last but not the least, Idaho and Montana has had an intense interstate rivalry, with the two teams taking each other on for the Little Brown Stein (trophy, Idaho leads the series, 55-27-2).
