The Houston Cougars is University of Houston's college football team that plays in NCAA's Division I-A, under the West Division of Conference USA. Before becoming a member of the C-USA, the Houston Cougars have been affiliated with various conference since the football team's first establishment in 1946. In its first three years, UH's football program was under the Lone Star Conference then switched to the Gulf Coast Conference for the next couple of years. But it was actually in the Missouri Valley Conference that the Cougars first tasted glory when the team finished the season with a 6-5 win-loss record and a trip to its first postseason bowl, the Salad Bowl, in which they won against Dayton. The Cougars went on to win four conference titles in MVC ('52,'56,'57,'59) before playing independent again in 1960. In 1976, the team joined the Southwest Conference and won the conference title on their debut year. They finished their stint in Southwest with 4 conference championships and seven trips to postseason bowl games. With their present home in the C-USA, the Cougars have taken home the conference title twice, and had five trips to postseason bowl games.

All in all, the Cougars have won 10 conference titles, appeared in seventeen Bowl Games (winning 7), and is home to a Heisman winner (Andre Ware, 1989). The team is also currently number 59, as of 2006, in terms of overall winning percentage with a 52.48% winning clip.

Highlights

Nail In The Coffin. 10 years after heralded as Conference USA co-champions, the University of Houston Cougars and the University of Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles found themselves in the same spot, only this time, only one team takes home the title. Eventual NFL draftee Kevin Kolb conspired with Biren Ealy for a touchdown to put away the Eagles and capture their 10th conference title.
