The Gardner-Webb football program began operating as early as the mid-1940's when the team started playing in the independent scene. Six years after its inaugural season, the Runnin' Bulldogs became an NAIA Independent team as a NAIA Division I school. In 1975, the team then went on to be a member of the South Atlantic Conference where it competed for about two-and-a-half decades, winning the 1987 and the 1992 league championships. It was during that era that the school also transitioned from NAIA Division I to NCAA Division II level. In 2000, Gardner Webb was further elevated to Division I-AA status and two years later, would become part of the FCS' Big South Conference.
