The Fresno State Bulldogs represent the California State University, Fresno, or simply Fresno State, in the NCAA's Division I-Bowl Subdivision, playing under the Western Athletic Conference. The first ever Fresno State Bulldog squad, handled by Arthur Jones, debuted as an independent team in 1921 with back-to-back victories over California Tech (with identical final scores of 12-0). The following year, Fresno State became a member of the California Coast Conference and topped the conference standings to claim the CCC title, Fresno State's first. The team came back the following season to successfully defend their title to become back-to-back CCC champions. In 1925, Fresno State became a charter member of the Northern California Athletic Conference and became a member until 1940. The team peaked in 1930 under coach Stan Borleske, registering the team's first undefeated season and claiming the team's third championship, the NCAC title. In its stay with NCAC, Fresno State won a total of 4 conference titles (1930, '34, '35, '37), and played in its first ever Bowl Game, the Charity Bowl, where the team defeated Central Arkansas in the slimmest of margin (27-26). The team became a member of the California Collegiate Athletic Association from 1939 through 1950, took a leave to become independent for two seasons, before returning to the CCAA from 1953 through 1968. The Bulldogs were quite a hit in the CCAA, capturing eight CCAA championships and appearing in their first Division I-A Bowl Game, the Raisin Bowl in 1946. One of the highlights of the team in their CCAA stint include the team's 4-peat title reign from 1958-61, culminating with the team's undefeated run in 1961 which was capped by a victory over Bowling Green in the Mercy Bowl. Fresno left the CCAA after the 1968 season to join the Big West Conference (formerly known as the Pacific Coast Athletic Association) in 1969. In its 13 seasons with the Big West, the Bulldogs claimed six titles and played five Bowl games (4 won, 1 lost). In Fresno State's debut with the Western Athletic Conference in 1992, the Bulldogs emerged on top with a 6-2 record to claim the team's 21st title overall. Fresno also claimed WAC titles in '93 and '99 for a total of 23 conference championships. The Bulldogs have also appeared in 16 Division I-A Bowl Games (9-7-0) and five College Division Bowl Games (2-3-0), including seven straight from 1999-2005.

Fresno State's rivals are the Hawai'i Warriors (Bulldogs lead the series, 20-18-1), the San Jose State Spartans (Bulldogs lead the series, 35-33-3), and the Boise State Broncos (Broncos lead the series, 4-5-0). Since 2005, Fresno State and Boise State contend for a milk jug trophy which is given to the winner of the rivalry game.
