Fred Davis (Born January 15, 1986 in Toledo, OH) played tight end for the USC Trojans in the NCAA college football tournament. Davis had a breakthrough senior season, making it to several All-American and All-Pac-10 teams after compiling team high numbers of 55 receptions (tied for 18th in school's season receptions chart and tops among Trojan tight ends), 794 receiving yards and 7 touchdown catches. His 14.4 yards per catch average is second best among tight ends in the nation while his total receiving yards and scoring catches are both no.1 among tight ends in USC history. Davis, the recipient of the 2007 John Mackey Award for the nation's best tight end, also became the first Trojan All-American tight end since Jim Obradovich in 1974 and was named as the team's co-MVP.

Personal Life

Fred is the son of Margo Davis. He majored in sociology at USC but is hoping to start his own business and make an investment. When he is not on the football field, he likes to sleep and play video games. His favorite athlete is Michael Jordan while his favorite team is the Cleveland Cavaliers. He considers Vince Young as the best player he ever played against and Reggie Bush as the best player he ever played with. USC's win over Michigan in the 2006 Rose Bowl is what he considers as the best win of his career.

High School

Davis played high school football at Rogers High School in Toledo, Ohio where he also was a basketball and track athlete. During his junior year, Davis ran for 1,100 yards and caught 50 passes for 700+ yards with 26 TDs, earning for himself a spot in the Student Sports Junior All-American and All-Ohio teams. He also played on the defensive team, registering 80 tackles and 2 interceptions. As a senior, Davis continued to play on both sides of the field (playing as wide receiver, running back, quarterback & strong safety), catching 500+ yards and rushing for 600+ more on offense while registering 100+ tackles and 4 pick-offs on defense. Davis, who also tallied 12 touchdowns, was named as the Super Prep All-Midwest Offensive MVP. The Toledo, OH native also earned several other accolades, including a spot at the Super Prep All-American team, Prep Star All-American team, Insiders.com All-American team, Super Prep Elite 50, Prep Star Top 100 Dream Team, USA Today All-USA second team, Tom Lemming Top 100, Prep Star All-Midwest and All-Ohio selections in 2003. He was also rated as the no.2 wide receiver in his recruiting class coming out of high school according to Scout.com.

College

Davis graduated a semester early in high school and enrolled at the University of Southern California in the spring of 2004.

2004

Davis, a highly recruited wide receiver, only saw minimal minutes and was relegated to back-up duties during his rookie season. Although he showed solid speed and raw athletic ability of a wide receiver, he lacked the route-running skills and ball-catching ability and was thus later on moved to tight end. He had to bulk up from 215 lbs to 250 and had to learn blocking techniques and schemes in order to adjust to his new position. He made his very first collegiate catch against Stanford, a 15 yarder, before finishing his maiden year as a Trojan with four catches for 30 yards with a 7.5 yards per catch average in nine games behind tight ends Dominique Byrd and Alex Holmes. Although Davis made significant contributions as a reserve, he was penalized for his repeated incidences of tardiness and was prohibited from travelling with the team to the BCS National Championship Game in the 2005 Orange Bowl.

2005

As a sophomore, Davis saw an increased amount of playing time as a tight end, playing in all 13 games and making three starts. He caught his first passes of the season against Arizona and set career highs in receptions and receiving yards a few weeks later in his first career start against Stanford, where he caught four passes for 35 yards and his first touchdown reception. He made his postseason debut in a Rose Bowl loss to Texas, catching two passes for 19 yards. He finished his 2nd year with 13 receptions for 145 yards and two touchdowns.

2006

Davis started ten of USC's 13 games during his junior year, including the season opener against Arkansas where he tallied game-best 5 catches for 59 yards and a 9-yard touchdown. He tallied two more touchdowns against Oregon State and Stanford, and set his career highs in receptions (6) and receiving yards (68) in the regular season finale against UCLA. He made his second-straight bowl game appearance in the Rose Bowl, helping the Trojans win over Michigan with 3 catches for 39 yards. He ended the year tallying 38 receptions for 352 receiving yards with 3 scoring catches and a spot at the 2006 Scout.com All-Pac-10 second team.

2007

Davis returned for his senior season as the starting tight end for the Trojans. With his exploits as a junior, Davis was listed as a preseason All-Pac-10 selection and was listed on the 2007 John Mackey Award watchlist. A month into the season, Davis turned out his best performance yet after setting new career highs in receptions (9), receiving yards (124) and touchdowns (2) in a win over Washington State. His efforts earned him a couple of weekly accolades, namely the John Mackey Tight End of the Week honors from the Nassau County Sports Commission as well as the USC Wells Fargo Student-Athletes of the Week award. A couple of weeks later, Davis outdid himself after catching 5 passes for 152 yards, the most receiving yards ever registered by a Trojan tight end. He went on to tally his third 100-receiving yard game against Arizona State and caught atleast a touchdown in six of the games he played in the regular season. He finished the year with his third straight postseason appearance, helping USC defeat Illinois in the Rose Bowl with 7 catches for 87 yards and a touchdown.

He finished his final year with team high numbers of 55 catches for 794 yards and 7 touchdowns. Davis went on to bag the John Mackey Award for the nation's top tight end and made it to All-Pac-10 and All-American selections of several organizations.
