The Florida Atlantic Owls represent the Florida Atlantic University in the NCAA Division I-Bowl Subdivision and plays under the Sun Belt Conference. Florida Atlantic is one of the latest additions in NCAA football, making its debut in 2001 as a Division I-AA Independent team. The university actually first made a public announcement about the creation of a football team in 1998, with Coach Howard Schnellenberger placed in charge both as the director of football operations and head Coach. In its first season, the Owls bowed to Slippery Rock in its first ever game but rebounded with back-to-back wins before finishing the season with a 4-6-0 win-loss-tie record. The Owls' record slipped to 2 and 9 the following season but managed to snatch 11 wins in 14 games in 2003, the team's best showing thus far. That season was also highlighted by 10 straight wins and a Division I-AA Semifinal Playoff appearance. In 2004, the Owls registered their last winning season (9-3-0) as the team only managed to win 7 of their last 16 games. In 2005, the team joined the Sun Belt Conference after spending its first four years as an independent. Florida Atlantic as of 2006, has collected 33 wins, with 37 losses for a 47.1% winning clip.

The Owls' known rivals are the Florida International Golden Panthers and the Troy Trojans. The Owls lead the series with the Golden Panthers, 4-1, including the massacre victory on November 25, 2006 in Miami, Florida (31-0). The FAU and the FIU rivalry game is called the Shula Bowl, with the winner receiving the Don Shula Award. The Owls however has yet to defeat the Trojans, as Troy leads the series (0-3). So far, the highest ranking the Owls have is the number 4 rank they received in 2003 (from the Sports Network Rank and the USA/ESPN Rank).
