The Florida Gators are the University of Florida's representatives in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), and plays in the Eastern Division of the Southeastern Conference. The start of Gators football history can be traced to 1906, when the team played as an independent under coach James Forsythe and turned out three successive winning seasons. Although the team was quite a success in piling up victories and turning out several winning seasons, conference championships and bowl game appearances didn't come by easy for the Gators in the early stages of the program. The Gators first postseason bowl game came in 1952 when the team led by coach Bob Woodruff defeated Tulsa for the Gator Bowl. The team had a brief success in the 1980's, particularly during the 1984 season when the team, led by an offensive line once dubbed as "The Great Wall of Florida," finished the year with a 9-1-1 record and was voted by several renowned organizations that include Billingsley Report, DeVold, Dunkel System, New York Times, Sporting News, among others, as the national champs. The team however hit football paydirt in the 1990's, the era when Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Steve Spurrier returned to his alma mater. Coach Spurrier wasted no time and right off led his team to only its 3rd SEC first place finish in 1990 but were ineligible for the conference championship that year. Florida won its first SEC title the following year, and followed it up in 5 more occassions (1993,1994,1995,1996,2000). In 1995, the team were unbeaten for the first time but were denied of the national title due to its lopsided loss in the Fiesta Bowl to Nebraska. But the following year, the Gators came out strong to start the season with a 10-0 win-loss record and hurdled a few more challenges on the way. including a SEC title win over the Alabama Crimson Tide and a Sugar Bowl Victory over Florida State, for its first national championship. When coach Spurrier left the team following the 2001 season to try his luck in the NFL, the team struggled to keep its winning form intact and waited several years to regain "championship status." Under coach Urban Meyer, the Gators slowly recovered from a few so-so seasons and in 2006, Florida played for the school's first BCS National Championship in January 2007, beating the Ohio State Buckeyes by the score of 41-14 to win Florida's second football national title.

The Gators have thus far won 2 wire national titles, 7 SEC championships, 34 postseason bowl game appearances (winning 16), and an all-time winning mark of 62%. Florida has also produced a couple of Heisman winners in Spurrier (1966) and Wuerffel (1996) and is home to many notable past and present NFL stars. Florida also has several rivals in NCAA college football, namely the Florida State (teams battle for the Governor's Cup), Miami (teams battle for the Seminole War Canoe), Georgia (teams face off in The World's Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party), and Tennessee (teams face off in The Third Saturday in September).

Highlights

2007 BCS Championships. 10 years after the Gators became national champions for the first time, Florida had a stellar 2006 season as it finished the elims with an 11-1 record, advancing to the conference title match against Arkansas. The SEC title victory over the Razorbacks proved to be the gateway for the Gators to advance into the BCS championship game, and although Florida entered the game as 7 point underdogs against their counterparts, the Ohio State Buckeyes, the Gators dominated their opposition to win the national title for the second time.
