Established in 1932, the East Carolina Pirates football squad represent the East Carolina University in the top-tier NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision. Part of the East Division of Conference-USA, the Pirates started in the Independent scene in 1932 before joining the North State Conference in 1947. It was there that East Carolina won their first ever conference title, the North Carolina State Intercollegiate Conference Championship in 1953. The Pirates remained with the NSC before joining the Carolinas Conference in 1961. Their stint with CC was short-lived (only 1 season) as they became an independent team once more in 1962. The Pirates spent 12 seasons with the Southern Conference (1965-76) and made good with their stay as they were able to capture 4 Southern Conference Championships (1966,'72,'73,'76). In addition, the Pirates have appeared in 12 postseason Bowl Games and is ranked #65 in terms of all time winning percentage with a 51.26% clip.

East Carolina is also home to several players who have made it big outside of the NCAA, as it has produced 19 All-Americans, and 52 NFL draftees since 1961. Since 1985, there were eight former Pirates who have played in a Super Bowl with five of them winning the World Championship.
