Donnie Avery (Born June 12, 1984 in Houston, TX) plays wide receiver for the Houston Cougars in the NCAA college football tournament. Avery capped his four year career with a number of postseason accolades that include a spot at the Conference USA Team (as voted by the coaches and the media) after a breakout year where he registered team and league leading numbers in the receiving categories with his 81 catches for 1,336 yards and seven touchdowns. His catching yards per game average of 111.3 also ranks fourth in the country and also paces the league in receptions per game (6.75). He has also racked up an impressive 146.67 all-purpose yards per game, 28.27 of which were coming from his kickoff return average. Avery has also been invited to several postseason games in his senior year, including the Hula Bowl, the East-West Shrine Game, the Senior Bowl, and the Texas vs. the Nation game.

Donnie D. Avery is the son of Melonie and Dennis Robertson of Houston. He is a sports administration major in Houston.

Avery attended Hastings High School where he was a unanimous First-Team, All-District selection both as a wide receiver and return specialist as a senior. He paced District 19-5A after catching 36 passes for 502 yards and two TDs while returning 13 punts for 399 yards and three touchdowns to help carry Hastings to an 11-3 record and a district championship. He also recorded seven kickoff returns for 345 yards and one TD while rushing 16 times for 175 yards and two scoring runs. TheInsiders.com recruiting website ranked him #89.

Prior to signing with Houston, Avery was also being eyed by several teams including Kansas State, Tennessee, TCU, New Mexico and Kansas.

Avery made 11 starts in his rookie season, playing both as a wide receiver and a punt/kickoff returner. He made his college football debut @ Rice, catching 3 passes for 42 yards in a 7-10 loss to the Owls. He caught season highs of 4 receptions against UAB, 80 yards against Tulane, and a touchdown reception in two consecutive games. He finished the year with 18 catches for 293 yards and 2 TDs enroute to earning a spot at the Conference USA All-Freshman Team.

As a sophomore, Avery made 10 starts in 12 of the games he played. He caught season highs of 8 catches and 112 yards against Memphis but had a then-career high 2 scoring catches against Texas-El Paso. He also had three 100+ yard games and finished the season with 5 catches for 71 yards against Kansas in his first postseason appearance at the Fort Worth Bowl. He was third on the team in catches (44) and was second in both receiving yards (688) and TDs (5).

As a junior, Avery set a school-single season record after appearing in all 14 games (one of 36 players to do so). He recorded season-highs in receptions (7) against Tulane, receiving yards (113) against Tulsa, and scored a touchdown in five of the 14 games. He finished second in both receiving yards (852) and receptions (57) and third in touchdown receptions (5). He placed no.10 in C-USA in receptions per game (3.85), and ranked no.6 in receiving yards per game (60.9). He capped the year with his second bowl game appearance in a loss to South Carolina at the Liberty Bowl (7 catches, 72 yards) and was also voted by the coaches into the All-C-USA First Team.

In his final year of eligibility, Avery posted a breakthrough performance, helping the Cougars to a 6-2 league finish and 8-4 overall. He had career-highs in catches (13) and receiving yards (346) against Rice and scored a season-best two touchdowns also against the Owls and against East Carolina. He finished the regular season as the no.1 receiver in the league, catching 81 passes for 1,336 receiving yards and topped C-USA in receptions per game (6.75) and yards per game (111.3). Avery ranked no.4 in the nation in yards per game and normed 146.67 all-purpose yards per game.
