The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers football team represents the Coastal Carolina University (CCU) in NCAA Division I-Championship Subdivision football as a member of the Big South Conference. Coastal Carolina's football program began play only in 2003, opening the team's campaign with a 21-14 victory over Newberry, before going on to finish its maiden season with a 6-5-0 record. In the team's first four years and under the tutelage of head football coach David Bennett, the Chants have thus far ammassed an impressive overall record of 34 wins against 11 losses for a 75.6% mark. In 2004, the team was able to sweep all of its conference assignments to claim the Big South Conference title for the first time. The Chants also reach the 10-win mark that season, which is so far the highest number of wins the Chants have tallied in a season. The following year, although the team finished with a conference-best overall record of 9-wins and 2-losses, CCU ended up sharing the Big South title with Charleston Southern after both teams finished with identical 3-1 records. 2006 painted a familiar picture for football fans as the Chants were once again on top of the Big South standings, with a spot-less conference record to earn the team their 3rd straight conference title. The team finished the regular season 9-2 overall, including wins over #3 Furman and Wofford to earn the team a ticket to the Division I FCS playoffs against eventual champions, Appalachian State. Although the Chants came out on the losing end, the team was able to score more points on the host Mountaineers than any other team during the 2006 season in the playoffs.

Since its inception, the Chanticleers have only been handled by one coach, David Bennett, who is a former head coach at Catawba College in Salisbury. Bennett was named as the National Football Championship Subdivision Coach of the Year by Sportexe in 2006 because of the efforts he put up in placing the Chants in the Division I FCS playoffs in just its fourth season (3rd fastest in history). In 2007, quarterback Tyler Thigpen, who was seventh in the voting for the Walter Payton Award as the nation’s top player, became the first CCU NFL draftee after being picked in the seventh round by the Minnesota Vikings.
