Cincinnati QB Mauk's appeal denied

UC QB Ben Mauk's 6th year saga continues.

University of Cincinnati quarterback Ben Mauk's request for reconsideration on his original waiver for a sixth year of eligibility was denied by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Wednesday.

Early this year, Mauk sought for a sixth year of eligibility in hopes of regaining the year he lost during his redshirt freshman year at Wake Forest. After his initial request was turned down, Mauk requested the NCAA to reconsider based on new information submitted regarding a foot injury he sustained in high school which equired an additional operation in the spring of 2003.

The NCAA however, denied the appeal as there was a lack of contemporaneous medical documents from Wake Forest. Despite the setback, Mauk will continue to work with his former college coaches and the Wake Forest University medical staff to collect the needed information as he plans to pursue his appeal.

"This is just another step through the NCAA process and is nothing out of the ordinary," said Bearcats coach Brian Kelly. "The Mauks will continue to work through it. The next step in the NCAA process will give Ben his first opportunity to speak directly with the Student-Athlete Reinstatement Committee."

After redshirting in 2003, Mauk played 18 games as a Demon Deacon from 2004-06 but saw the field only once during the 2006 season after sustaining a shoulder injury in the opener. He transferred to Cincinnati the following year and led the Bearcats to 10 wins that include a win at the Papajohns.com Bowl after completing 235-of-386 passes for 3,121 yards. He also threw for a school record 31 touchdowns during the year.
