The Tennessee-Chattanooga Moccasins (recently renamed to Mocs) football team is an NCAA Division I-Championship Subdivision team, playing under the Southern Conference and representing the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (or simply Chattanooga). Chattanooga's football program began play as early as 1899, losing its first game on Christmas Day to Tennessee, 0-6. The team played as an independent in its first few seasons before joining the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1914. The Mocs' football program first tasted success in the mid 20's with a four-peat championship reign that span from 1926-29 (under Coach Frank Thomas in the first three, then with Coach Red Drew in 1929). While still with the SIAA, the team also aligned with the Dixie Conference from 1930-41. A year before leaving the SIAA, the Mocs claimed both the SIAA and the Dixie Conference titles in 1931. The team also won a couple more titles with the Dixie Conference in 1940-41 before competing as independent once more in 1942. Chattanooga became Division II Independent when the school was classified Division II in 1973 but aligned with the Southern Conference in 1977 when the team was reclassified into Division I level. The Mocs under Coach Joe Morrison, made quick work on its opponents during its debut with the Southern Conference, finishing with a 4-1-0 record in conference play and 9-1-1 overall to earn a share of the Southern Conference championship. The team strung up back-to-back titles after that, sharing the conference title with Furman in '78 and was undisputed champs in '79. The Mocs claimed another championship in 1984 with Coach Buddy Nix on the helm for the team's 4th Southern title and 12th overall.

As of 2006, Chattanooga has won just a shade over .500 of the team's total games and is yet to appear in a postseason Bowl Game. Two Moc teams have also made it into the Division I-AA final polls: the 1982 and the 1984 teams which were both ranked #17 in the NCAA Polls.
