Chase Clement (born Charles Austin Clement on June 11, 1986, in San Antonio) plays quarterback for the Rice Owls in the NCAA college football tournament. After an impressive sophomore season that saw him breaking Rice's single season record in TD passes and leading his team with a 6-2 record as a starter, Clement exploded with a breakout year as a junior, smashing a total of 18 school records throughout the 2007 season after throwing for 3,377 yards and 29 TDs on a 59.1% completion rate. The team's most valuable player ended the season with an average of 433.7 yards per game of total offense in the last seven league games to become the first player in NCAA history to record consecutive games with over 100 yards rushing and 300 yards passing, achieving the feat in victories over Texas-El Paso and Southern Methodist.

[edit] Personal Life
Chase is one of Craig and Jayne Kinder Clement's three children, having one brother and one sister. His mother was a former golf player at Texas in 1979. At school, Chase is a economics/pre-med major at the Rice University.
[edit] High School
The versatile San Antonio native attended the Alamo Heights High School where he was a three sport athlete, with letters in baseball and track. The former Eagle Scout not only led the Mules to the area championship in baseball as a junior, but under coach Don Byrd also engineered his team's school best 13-2 record in 2003 capped by a trip to the Class 4A state semifinals. Clement, a two year starter, compiled a total of 3,243 passing yards (193 of 305 completion) and 28 touchdown passes to go along his 420 yards and 14 scoring runs as a senior, enroute to being named as the San Antonio Express-News' San Antonio area offensive player of the year. He also earned a spot in the all-area, all-city, and all-District 27-4A selections and was honored as a player of the week once by KENS-TV. The team's captain, who accumulated 3,663 yards of total offense and 42 TRDs, achieved the same amount of success in the classroom with a 3.5 GPA (4.0 scale in high school) with an Academic all-district honors.

In his first tour of duty, Clement was able to see action in all of Rice's 11 games, with a brief appearance in the season opening loss against UCLA (3-of-8 for 31 yards). Clement scored on his first touchdown the following week, scoring on a TD run in another loss against Texas. He also threw his first TD and INT against UAB and had his first career start against Navy, where he put up season highs in completions (11), passing yards (94), and carries (20) and connected on his second TD pass of the year. His 51-yard completion with Jarett Dillard on the season-finale against Houston was his longest conversion of the season. He ended the year as the Owl's leading passer with 582 yards and five TDs on 53 completions in 126 attempts while also rushing for 32 yards on 65 carries.
[edit] 2006
Clement's game improved drastically as his playing time increased during his sophomore outing. He made his season debut against Houston, making his first start and completing 12 of 26 passes for 152 yards and 2 TDs as he rallied the Owls from a 0-14 deficit to score 30 consecutive points against the Cougars. Unfortunately, Clement injured his thumb during that game, forcing him to sit out the next three games. He returned against Army and led the Owls to 31 unanswered points for a 48-14 win. He finished the game establishing new career highs in almost every passing category, including completions (29), passing yards (299), and TDs (5 - school record) with no interceptions in 39 passing attempts enroute to being named the C-USA Offensive Player of the Week. After a loss to Tulane, Clement led the Owls to five consecutive wins, and in the process establishing career highs in rushing yards (141) and scoring runs (2) against UAB, and throwing a total of 12 TDs in that stretch with atleast a TD in every game. Clement's streak however was cut short with a chipped right collarbone that forced him out of action in the season-finale against SMU as well as what could've been his postseason debut @ the New Orleans Bowl against Troy.
Nontheless, the team co-captain was honored by the league with an All-CUSA honorable mention selection after producing 1,707 yards through the air (5th best in school history and the most since 1990), with 21 touchdown passes. Clement's accuracy was also evident as he was picked off only 5 times in 265 attempts (153 completions), with 120 straight passes w/o an INT that was broken only in his last play before the injury. His 2,188 yards of total offense was the 4th best in school history while his 21 TD passes to Jarett Dillard made the two the most productive tandem in school history.
[edit] 2007
The Alamo Heights product carried over his strong showing from his sophomore year to produce a very productive junior season. He made his season debut against Nicholls State, completing 11 of 28 passes for 101 yards with 1 scoring run but threw three interceptions in a 14-16 loss. He compiled three straight 200+ yard passing games against Baylor, Texas Tech, and Texas with three passing TDs and 1 rushing score in that stretch. In Rice's first ever win, he had season lows of 9 completions, 20 attempts, and 67 yards but managed to throw 2 TDs and 0 INTs in a 31-29 win over Southern Miss. Since then, Clement managed to rack up atleast 281 passing yards and threw atleast 2 TDs in the last 7 games, including a spectacular 6-touchdown, 395-yard performance against UTEP that garnered him a CUSA Offensive player of the week honors. He then closed out the year with a career performance against Tulsa with single game bests of 40 completions, 66 attempts, and 541 yards.
He went on to break 18 school records while establishing single season school marks in attempts (508), completions (300), yards (3,377), touchdown passes (29), total offense (3,912), total touchdowns (37) and total plays (652). With still a year of eligibility left, Clement has already owned the school career records in touchdown passes (55), total offense (6,714), and total touchdowns (68). His splendid performance eventually earned him a spot at the All-CUSA second team, as chosen by both league coaches and media.
