The Charleston Southern Buccaneers represent the Charleston Southern University in the NCAA college football tournament, currently competing in the Division I Championship Subdivision under the Big South Conference. Charleston Southern's football program is one of the recently implemented football programs in the NCAA, as the team only began play in 1991. David Dowd was CSU's first coach, but failed to steer his Buccaneers to a favorable record in its inaugural year (only finishing with a 3-7-0 card). The team's first recorded win in the NCAA happened on September 21, 1991, defeating Newport News Apprentice School, 13-9. CSU started out as a Division III independent team from 1991-92 then into Division I-AA independent from 1993-2001 when the school was reclassified in 1993. In 2002, when the Big South Conference started sponsoring football, Charleston Southern was among the first to field teams along with Gardner-Webb and Liberty. That year marked the last season of head coach David Dodd, leading the team to another disappointing season (finishing with a 4-8 win-loss card). By 2003, CSU tapped the services of Jay Mills to become only the second coach in CSU's young football program. Coach Mills guided the team to a steady ascencion in the Big South, slowly rebuilding the team that resulted to the team's improvement in the standings. In 2004, the Buccaneers reached the .500 winning mark for the first time since its inception with a 5-win, 5-loss card. But it was only the start of good things to come for the Bucs as in 2005, the team wrote a page in the CSU football history with its first title, the Big South Championship (shared with Coast Carolina) after turning out a 3-1 record in the conference and 7-4 overall. In 2006, the Bucs improved to a 9-2 season record which thus far is the highest number of wins in all of their 16 seasons of existence.

As of 2006, the Bucs only have 56 wins against 116 losses, with a conference title, but have yet to appear in a postseason Bowl Game.
