Charles Scott (born Charles Edward Scott, Jr. on Aug. 8, 1988, in Tampa, Fla.) plays running back for the Louisiana State University Tigers in the NCAA college football tournament. Scott is a versatile running back who runs with outstanding power and balance. He is a physical type who can break apart defenses with long runs after barreling himself and flattening the opposition standing on his way. Not really the flashy or speedy type but like how his team plays, is just plain effective. In a team that does not feature any one rusher, Scott has managed to put himself in the spotlight as a feature back with his consistency and efficiency on the ground.

[edit] Personal Life

Charles Edward is one of Charles and Phyllis Scott's six children together with his five siblings, namely Edward, Samuel, Keante, Kalaya, and Charmian. He majored in general studies with concentrations in business administration, communication studies and sociology at the Louisiana State University. Charles grew up in rural North Louisiana in their hometown of Saline where he was raised in home-cooked meals using fresh ingredients from the family farm. Aside from foobtall, Charles also loves baseball, deer hunting, and horse riding. He did not play football until he was in eighth grade.

[edit] High School

Scott attended high school at Jonesboro-Hodge High in Jonesboro, Louisiana where he was a three-sport star. Aside from his many accolades in football, Scott also claimed all-district honors in baseball and basketball. On the football field, Scott played under head coach Shannon Brown who utilized him on both offense (as a running back) and defense (as a linebacker and defensive back). During his junior year, Scott rushed for 1,672 yards and 18 touchdowns to earn his second of three all-district selections. He improved his numbers the following season, rushing for 2,039 yards and 28 touchdowns with an 8.2 yards per carry average to lead the Tigers to a berth in the 2005 Class 2A quarterfinals. He ended his senior season as one of the most decorated players in the state, taking home several prestigious awards such as the Mr.Football and the Gatorade Player of the Year honors in the state of Louisiana. Other recognitions he received from the media include selections to the Tigerbait.com Louisiana Top 20, FSN South’s Countdown to Signing Day “All-South” first-team, Atlanta Journal-Constitution Super Southern 100, Baton Rouge Advocate Super Dozen, Mobile Register Super Southeast 120, New Orleans Times-Picayune Top 16 Blue-Chip list, and Orlando Sentinel All-Southern Team. In addition, he was also named by the Orlando Sentinel as the Louisiana Player of the Year.

[edit] College

A four-star running back and rated as the 10th best RB prospect in the nation, Scott received scholarship offers from big time schools such as Alabama, Florida, Oklahoma, and USC but decided to sign with his hometown school.

[edit] 2006

As successful as he was in the high school ranks, Scott arrived at LSU with great astonishment while keeping up with the pace of college football. Although he played immediately as a true freshman, he was given the time to adjust while playing back-up to the likes of Justin Vincent, Jacob Hester, and Alley Broussard. He played on special teams and lettered as a freshman. He made his collegiate debut against Louisiana-Lafayette where he rushed five times for 39 yards in the 45-3 LSU win. The following week against Arizona, he had a season-long 38-yard run to score his first collegiate TD in the win over the Wildcats. After sitting out the Auburn game, he was fielded in against Tulane and recorded his first 100-yard game when he collected a season high 101 rush yards on 15 carries with two scoring runs to help the Tigers beat the Green Wave by 42. With that performance, he thus earned the distinction of being the quickest true freshman to rush for 100 yards since Kevin Faulk accomplished the feat in the second game of his career in 1995. After that career game, he was rewarded with his first collegiate start against Mississippi State and responded with two touchdowns and 27 yards on 11 carries in the 31-point blow-out. In the shut-out win over Kentucky, Scott led the team with 9 carries for 56 yards before registering his last carries of the season against Fresno State (2 attempts, 7 yards).

In seven games that year, Scott rushed for 277 yards and five touchdowns on just 46 carries with an average of 6.0 yards per carry to go with 3 catches for 24 yards.

[edit] 2007

As a sophomore, Scott continued to play behind Hester on the tailback position while earning extended minutes on the kickoff team. LSU's RB-by-committee system prevented Scott from having a breakout season, starting slow with a 3-carry, 4-yard performance in the shut-out win at Mississippi State although he did register his first scoring catch on an 11-yard reception. In wins over Virginia Tech, Middle Tennessee State, and South Carolina, he only rushed a combined 8 times for 48 yards but caught a season high 3 passes for 22 yards including his second TD reception of the season. Against the Green Wave, he carried the ball six times for 53 yards (8.8 avg.) and scored on two runs in the 34-9 LSU win but was once again limited to single digits (4 rushes, 9 carries) in the 4-point victory over Florida. At Lexington, Scott led the team with a season high 94 yards on 7 carries with two TDs as LSU got shocked by Kentucky, 37-43. After a 28-yard, 5-carry effort against Auburn, Scott had a season low -1 yard loss in only a carry in the 1-TD victory at Alabama. He also had 5 carries for 13 yards against Louisiana Tech, 3 carries for 66 yards and his last TD of the season at Mississippi, but was down to a carry for 4 yards in the heartbreaking 2-point upset loss to Arkansas. He did not receive any hand-offs in the SEC title game against Tennessee but rushed twice for 6 yards in the BCS national title win over Ohio State.

Despite getting limited carries (45 attempts for 324 yards), Scott was able to prove his versatility that season after catching 12 passes for 115 yards in addition to nine special teams tackles in 14 appearances.

[edit] 2008

As was the previous season, Scott entered his junior year expected to share carries with Keiland Williams and Richard Murphy. He did get the advantage during opening day when he started against Appalachian State and took his first carry for 56 yards gain before punching in an 8-yard score for LSU's first TD of the season. He finished the game leading all RBs with 160 yards (most since Alley Broussard's 250 vs. Ole Miss) and 2 TDs on 16 carries. Against North Texas, he ran for touchdowns of 39 and 45 yards and carried the ball only seven times for 102 net yards to help LSU tally win no.2 over the Mean Green. At Auburn, he registered his third consecutive 100-yard rushing game of the season after gaining 132 yards on 21 carries in the thrilling 26-21 win over the Tigers. With his performance, he became the first LSU RB to rush for three consecutive 100-yard games since Joseph Addai did in 2005. Against Mississippi State, he went over the 100-rush yard mark for the 4th straight game with 141 yards and 2 TDs on 27 carries in the 10-point win over the Bulldogs to become just the first Tiger to open a season with four straight 100-yard rushing games since Charles Alexander did so in 1978. He also became the first LSU player to record four straight 100-yard rushing games since Vincent did the feat in the final four games of 2003.
