The Boise State Broncos represent the Boise State University in NCAA Division I-Bowl Subdivision football tournament, playing under the Western Athletic Conference. Boise State's heavily successful football program officially began as part of Junior College in 1933. The Broncos were quite a success in Junior College, compiling 199 wins in 269 games for a 75.7% winning percentage. The team's stint with JC also bore the school's first national championship in 1958 (disputed). In 1968, Boise State became an independent team in Division II and competed without a home for two seasons. In 1970, the Broncos were admitted into the Big Sky Conference, which at that time was still a Division II conference. A couple of years later, Boise State which was led by then head coach Tony Knap captured the Big Sky Conference championship in three successive seasons, from 1973-'75. After losing the title in '76 under a new coach (Jim Criner), the Broncos regrouped to regain their championship status in 1977. Boise State remained part of the Big Sky when the conference was elevated to Division I-AA status in 1978, even capturing its 5th Big Sky conference title and its 2nd national title (recognized) 2 years later (1980). In 1996, two years after capturing their 6th and last Big Sky title, the Broncos joined the Big West Conference but failed to live up to its reputation as a contender when it only registered a single win against 9 losses. It took some rebuilding process to build another championship run which culminated in the 1999 season when the team won the first of its back-to-back Big West Conference championship. After a successful 2000 season, Boise State joined the Western Athletic Conference. The team would flourish into an immediate powerhouse in the WAC under Coach Dan Hawkins with five straight conference titles (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006). Except for their maiden season, the Broncos have also appeared in five straight postseason Bowl games, winning three of those.

As of 2006, Boise State has so far won 45 of 48 games in the WAC. They have won a total of 13 conference titles under three various conferences, and won 2 national titles. Boise State has an existing rivalry with the University of Idaho Vandals, and with the Fresno State Bulldogs (the Broncos-Bulldogs rivalry began a tradition in 2005, where the winner of the match-up claims a milk jug trophy).

[edit] Highlights

The Bronco Bust! In 2007, the Boise State Broncos faced off with the Oklahoma Sooners in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Down by 7 late in the fourth canto, the Broncos rallied back to send the game into overtime. Down by a touchdown again in the dying seconds of the game, the Broncos relied on their unorthodox plays, capped by a "Statue of Liberty Play" to escape with a single-point victory over the Sooners.
