The Arkansas Razorbacks is a Division I-A college football team, representing the University of Arkansas in the Western Division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). The Razorbacks football began play in 1894, and played independent up until 1914. In 1915, Arkansas joined the Southwest Conference which became their home for over seven decades. The team however did not have any significant achievement until the 1930's, when the team went on to their first postseason bowl game against Centenary (LA) for the Dixie Bowl. The team's major title though came in 1936, winning their first of 13 Southwest Conference titles. In 1964, Arkansas had their first major shot at the national championship. Along with Alabama, Arkansas finished their games with a 10-0 slate. But the most recognized polls at that time, The Associated Press and the United Press International, awarded the national title to Alabama even before the postseason bowl games took place so eventhough the Razorbacks was the only undefeated team through the postseason, they failed to capture the national title. The only other time Arkansas made a strong case for the national championship was in 1977 when the team, led by Lou Holtz and finished the season with an 11-1 record plus an Orange bowl victory over Oklahoma, was named the national champ by the Foundation for the Analysis of Competitions and Tournaments. Arkansas is currently part of the Southwest Conference, the affiliation they joined since 1992.

Arkansas has thus far appeared in 35 postseason bowl games (winning 11 of them), won 13 Conference titles (all with the Southwest Conference), and was nominated for the national championship twice (in 1964 and '77). Arkansas' known rivals in the NCAA are the Texas Longhorns, the same team the Razorbacks faced in the 1969 Game of the Century (Texas won, 14-15).
