The Arizona State Sun Devils represent the Arizona State University in Division I football under the Pacific-10 Conference. Founded in 1897, the Wildcats football began playing independently up until the 1931 season, when the team was affiliated with the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The Sun Devils wasted little time as it made a great impression by capturing the conference title in only their debut season. Arizona State went on to win this very same title six more times (1939, '40, '52, '57, '59, and '61) before switching affiliations in 1962 with the Western Athletic Conference. The team spent 16 seasons with the "WAC" where the team added seven more conference titles to their stash, including 5 consecutive from 1969 to 1973. Also, the team posted a 62 win-9 loss record from 1970 through '75, highlighted by their 1975 Fiesta Bowl upset victory over the Nebraska Cornhuskers. A year after capturing their last Western Athletic Conference title, the Sun Devils along with eventual rival, the University of Arizona Wildcats, joined the Pacific 10 (previously known as the Pac-8) in 1978. ASU's first notable game in the Pac-10 is its upset victory over then #1 ranked USC. Aside from the Sun Devils' Fiesta Bowl (1983) and Rose Bowl (1987) victories, the team faced quite a struggle in nearly two decades before rising to prominence once again in 1996 when the team finished with an 11-1 record punctuated by a 19-0 victory over then #1 Nebraska Cornhuskers.

Thus far, the Sun Devils have compiled a total of over 500 wins, 16 conference titles, two national championship selections (in 1970 and 1975), with 23 postseason Bowl Games and 12 Bowl Game victories. Arizona State also meets its rivals, the Arizona Wildcats, every year in which the winner takes home the Territorial Cup.
