The University of Arizona's football squad, the Arizona Wildcats, currently plays collegiate football in the Pacific 10 Conference and was established in 1899 as an independent team. The squad was formerly known as the Arizona Varsity but renamed later to Wildcats in 1914. In 1931, the Wildcats got admitted in the Border Intercollegiate Athletic Conference where the team won four conference titles (1935,'36,'41,'60). After the team's stint with the "BIAC," Arizona joined the Western Athletic Conference in 1962 and won the conference's two seasons later. The team duplicated this in 1973 before leaving for the Pacific-10 Conference in 1978. As a Pac-10 football squad, Arizona hit paydirt in the 90's when coach Dick Tomey mentored the squad. Coach Tomey popularized his "Desert Swarm" defense (a defensive strategy characterized by tough, hard-nosed tactics) during his tenure and was quite successful with it as the team achieved its first 10-win season enroute to a Fiesta Bowl victory over the touted Miami Hurricanes in 1993. Five seasons later, the Wildcats achieved another milestone by finishing the season with a 12-1 win-loss record and a Holiday Bowl appearance where the team trounced the Nebraska Cornhuskers for their 5th postseason Bowl game victory. The team went on to finish 2nd in the Pac-10 conference title race and 3rd in the national rankings that year.

The Wildcats have thus far compiled seven conference championships, with thirteen postseason Bowl Game appearances (winning five). Aside from all the major titles up for grabs in every season, Arizona also goes after the Territorial Cup which is awarded to the winner of the Arizona-Arizona State game.
