The Alabama Crimson Tide represents the University of Alabama in NCAA Division I-A's college football tournament, competing under the Western Division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC). Alabama's football program is one of the most decorated not just in the SEC, but in the entire NCAA as well. The Crimson Tide has won almost every title there is to win, and to prove just how successful the team is, it currently ranks number 5 in all-time win-loss card in the NCAA, tallying over 700 wins for over 112 years. The AP Poll also placed Alabama in the 4th spot in its All Time Final AP Poll.

The Crimson Tide history actually started back in 1892, competing as an independent team for two years before joining the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association in 1895. But business only picked up for the Alabama gridiron gang in the 1920's when the team joined the Southern Conference in 1922. Two years later, the Crimson Tide won their first conference title, then not only successfully defended it the following year, but added the first of their many National championships as well. That season was capped with their first Rose Bowl appearance, a 20-19 squeaker of a win over Washington for their first postseason bowl game victory. By 1926, the team was already a 3-peat conference champ, a back-to-back national champ, and a Rose Bowl contender for the 2nd straight year. This same amount of success was duplicated in 1930 before the team, along with the other 12 members of the Southern Conference, formed their own conference now known as the SEC.

The team was equally dominating in the SEC, as the team won the inaugural SEC championship and as of 2006, has 21 SEC titles under its belt. The team has so far won 12 wire national titles with 25 conference titles to boot, appeared in 54 postseason bowl games (winning 30), has won an all-time average of 70.9% of their games, and has produced 92 All-Americans. Since 1893, Alabama has also developed this rivalry with the Auburn Tigers popularly known as the Iron Bowl and is regarded as one of the greatest rivalry in college football history. The two teams have so far squared off in 71 games, with Alabama winning 38 of them, with one draw. Alabama's other rivals are the Tennessee Volunteers (whom the Crimson Tide play annually in the "Third Saturday in October") and the LSU Tigers.

[edit] Highlights

The Drive. The Iron Bowl is a game played by fierce rivals Auburn University and the University of Alabama which, as surveyed by Sports Illustrated, ranks 2nd among the greatest sports rivalries, just behind the Boston Red Sox-New York Yankees rivalry. In 1985, the two teams slugged it out in a nail-biting thriller, with the outcome determined right at the last second. Alabama, behind by a point with under a minute left, made their final drive from their own 12 yard line. The Crimson Tide however managed to reach the Auburn territory just enough for a field goal attempt which went in as time expired.
