Akron junior defensive lineman Ryan Bain will be out for the rest of the year after being ruled ineligible by the National Collegiate Athletic Association.
Bain, an Iowa transfer, was said to have been using an over-the-counter dietary supplement that contained an unspecified ingredient banned by the NCAA, according to a statement released by the university's athletic department Friday. The announcement added that the team was aware of the situation and was trying to resolve it before officially making the announcement.
"The fact that we did not win what we thought was a legitimate appeal with the NCAA is disappointing," said UA director of athletics Mack Rhoades. "We support the NCAA and its strong stance on banned substances but feel this was an extraordinary circumstance."
A native of Bolingbrook, Ill., Bain transferred to Akron in February but has not played this season because of a foot injury that has prevented him from practicing with the team during the preseason. He will be medically cleared to practice later this year and will be allowed to play next season.
